India’s e-Passport 2025: What Travelers Need to Know |
India’s e-Passport 2025: Everything You Need to Know
India has officially rolled out its e-Passport starting 1 April 2024 as pilot projects in Chennai, Hyderabad, Ranchi, Surat, Amritsar, Goa, and Jaipur. This new passport features enhanced security and faster immigration processing while keeping the familiar look and feel of the traditional booklet.
If you’re planning international travel, here’s what you need to know about India’s new e-Passport.
What Is an e-Passport?
An e-Passport looks like a regular passport but includes a tiny RFID chip and antenna embedded inside the booklet. Your key personal details, including biometrics like your photo, are stored digitally on this chip.
Key features:
-
RFID chip + antenna embedded in the booklet
-
Data printed on the passport page and digitally stored
-
ICAO-compliant and recognized globally
The e-Passport chip ensures that border control systems can verify digitally-signed data, helping prevent tampering, cloning, or forgery. Look for the small gold “e-Passport” symbol on the cover.
What Changes for Travelers?
Travelers can expect:
-
Faster processing at immigration counters
-
Seamless use of e-gates in countries supporting ICAO-compliant e-passports
Despite the technology upgrade, the passport remains a physical booklet—it is not a mobile passport. You will still carry it like any other passport.
Rollout Status
India is phasing in e-Passports through the Passport Seva Programme 2.0.
-
Each Passport Office will begin issuing e-Passports as soon as it becomes technically enabled.
-
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) ensures compliance with ICAO standards and uses Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) for secure authentication.
-
All existing passports remain valid until expiry, so there’s no rush to replace your current booklet.
The rollout is expected to take several months as more offices go live.
How to Apply for an e-Passport
The application process remains the same as regular passports.
Steps:
-
Apply via the Passport Seva Portal
-
Schedule an appointment at a PSK or POPSK
-
Provide biometrics and required documents
If your Passport Office is enabled for e-Passports, your new booklet will automatically be an e-Passport.
Required documents:
-
Completed application form
-
Aadhaar card
-
PAN card, voter ID, driving licence, or bank passbook
-
Birth certificate (not required if born before 1 October 2023)
-
Educational certificates (10th marksheet or higher)

Safety, Privacy, and Myths
The e-Passport includes digital signatures and security standards that make forgery extremely difficult.
Myth vs Fact:
-
Myth: “My old passport is invalid.” → Fact: Valid until expiry
-
Myth: “It works from a phone.” → Fact: Physical booklet only
-
Myth: “It tracks me like GPS.” → Fact: Chip is passive and read only at short range
Always protect your passport from physical damage to keep the chip functional.
Summary
India’s e-Passport combines enhanced security, ICAO compliance, and global recognition, while keeping the application process and travel experience familiar. Whether renewing or applying for the first time, travelers can expect faster immigration checks and safer travel.
