Cambodia’s New e-Visa Restrictions
Cambodia has updated its e-Visa entry policy, affecting travellers entering from Thailand. As of August 19, 2025, holders of Cambodian e-Visas are no longer allowed to use two key land border checkpoints with Thailand.
This move comes amid ongoing regional security concerns and changing border management rules.
Closed Borders with Thailand
If you hold an e-Visa, you cannot enter Cambodia from Thailand through:
-
Cham Yeam (Koh Kong Province)
-
Poipet (Banteay Meanchey Province)
These crossings remain open for other visa categories, but e-Visa travellers must choose alternative entry routes.
Despite the closures with Thailand, travellers can still use the following official entry points:
Airports
-
Phnom Penh Techo International Airport (KTI) – operational from September 8, 2025, replacing the old Phnom Penh International Airport.
-
Siem Reap International Airport (SAI)
-
Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS)
Land Borders
-
Bavet (Vietnam–Cambodia border)
-
Tropaeng Kreal (Laos–Cambodia border)
Exiting Cambodia remains possible at any international checkpoint.
Practical Tips for Travellers
-
Plan ahead – Enter Cambodia only via approved airports or land borders with Vietnam or Laos.
-
Avoid Thailand crossings – Do not use Poipet or Cham Yeam with an e-Visa.
-
Check advisories – Review your government’s latest travel alerts before departure.
-
Keep documents ready – Carry a printed copy of your e-Visa, travel insurance, and confirmed bookings.
Travel Advisories & Safety Notes
-
Avoid Thai border areas unless necessary, as many governments have issued safety warnings due to ongoing instability.
-
It is unclear if embassy-issued visas face the same restrictions; travellers should verify before travelling.
